glass jello jars (or baby-food jars) (4 oz.), clean and dry

envelopes (1/4 oz each) unflavored gelatin powder

    Remove lids from jars and place jars in a small dish or platter (to make transporting filled jars to the refrigerator easier later on).

    Pour 1/2-cup water in a small bowl. Sprinkle unflavored gelatin powder over the water and let sit for 5 minutes.

    Meanwhile, in a medium pan over medium heat, combine 1/2-cup water, sugar and wine. Heat and stir (do not boil) until sugar is fully dissolved. Add gelatin mixture and stir until the liquid is clear and gelatin is fully dissolved.

    Pour liquid into the jars, filling up to the very top. Place in refrigerator to chill for at least 4 hours.

    Before serving, cut outside red part of strawberries off. Using a sharp paring knife or tiny heart cookie cutter, cut strawberry slices into small hearts with red seeded side up. Make one heart for each jar, or more if desired.

    When fully gelled, remove jello shot jars from refrigerator. Using a sharp paring knife, slice a deep slit into the gelatin close to the front of the jar. Holding the heart UPSIDE DOWN, press it into the slit. Using a skewer or your knife, gently push the heart down into position in the gelatin.

    Using a skewer, poke deep holes into the gelatin in random places and push pomegranate seeds into place for the Valentine snow. Replace lids on the jars and return to the refrigerator (for up to 2 hours) if not serving immediately.

    To serve, flip the jars upside down, sitting on the lids. Decorate with ribbon if desired. Serve with small spoons.

  • These roséwine jelly shots are flipped upside down with floating fruit in heart-warming snow globe style.

    So ya think jelly shots are made with vodka, hmm? Yop, yer right. But not when you need an “awwww!” on a special day.

    For that, you need wine. Rosé wine … for your Valentine. I rhyme. I'm so sublime.

    Valentine Snow Globe Jelly Shots... let’s do this!

    Jelly shot guts: Unflavored gelatin, sugar, water and wine. I used Skinny Girl … cuz … who doesn’t wanna be that girl? But you use you's fave.

    So, sprinkle unflavored gelatin into a little bowl of water. Let’r sit for 5 mins.

    While that’s jellin, put some more water into a pan and start heating it. Add a couple-a-cups-a rosé wine and some sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar, Sugar.

    Then add that jelled gelatin, and whisk away ‘til it’s incorporated. That’s chef-speak for getting the gelatin all up in that wine slurp. Keep it going ‘til it’s clear, then take the pan off the heat.

    Pour your vino into 6 little jars. I used jelly jars, but you could use baby-food jars if you happen to have a li’l bambino hanging out in your casa. Fill ‘em up to the tippy top. All. The. Way. You’ll see why later. Refrigerate at least 4 hours til there's no more sloshin goin on.

    When you’re ready to put them together, grab some fruit. Use your imagination. Or use my idea of strawberries and poma seeds. Yah, that’s easier.

    I sliced off the strawberry outsides so I could cut little hearts with the red seedy side showing. I used a tiny cookie cutter, but use a sharp knife and go rogue if you need to.

    Then take your jelled jelly shots and make a slit up front with a sharp little knife. There is something quite surgical about this. Quit dreaming about Dr. McDreamy. It isn’t that surgical. Moving on…

    I said that twice on purpose. Just do what I said, not what I did. Yah, I didn’t turn them upside down at first. But you’ll soon see why flipping them over IS a good idea. Juuuust truuuust meeee.

    Use a skewer or your knife to gently push the heart down a ways.

    Then use the skewer to poke some holes and insert some pomegranate seeds in random places. This is your Valentiney snow. Like it was shook up and it snowed poma seeds and berry hearts. Really. This is stellar. Even though I didn’t take a picture of the poking-in-the-poma-seeds part.

    Do the rest of the jars. You’ll get pretty fast at this. I was clocking at less than 30 seconds each.

    Put the lids on and turn ‘em upside down. Not even kidding – how cute are these. (And aren’t you glad I said to turn the hearts upside down TWICE?!)

    Pretty in pink (ribbon).

    Oh, honey…go call those fab friends 'n get 'em on over here... cuz it's never fun to jell alone!


Champagne Jello Shots, Part Deux. Your Complete Reference to Champagne Jello.

Last year, I posted sparkling champagne jello shots. Suddenly, champagne jello shots started popping up everywhere.

We had so much fun with these, we decided to make some again this year. This time, we tweaked the recipe and offer four varieties.

Refer back to the original recipe for more details, and step-by-step photos.

**Champagne is NOT sweet, so bear that in mind when making jello shots. If you prefer a sweet flavor, mix some soda or a sparkling drink in with the champagne. If you don’t drink at all, replace the champagne completely with any alcohol free sparkling drink for a virgin version that still bubbles.

The key step required for all versions:

1. Boil water and pour 1/2 cup into a bowl. Sprinkle two envelopes of unflavored gelatin over the water.

2. Once mixture has cooled a little, pour 2 1/2 cups of cold champagne (or a mixture of champagne and a sweet sparkling drink… or 2 1/2 cups of just the carbonated drink) over gelatin mixture.

3. Make sure to mix any gelatin that has stuck together until dissolved.

“The Original”

The first way is our original version. It requires champagne flutes, or this year we used mini champagne flutes.

This requires an additional step of making little numbers to create the year. You will make a colored jello according to the directions, set them up in the glasses, then pour champagne jello over.

It appears as though the numbers were just dropped in and create a fizz.

The recipe differs this time in that a mixture of half gingerale and half champagne was mixed in. For specific instructions click here.

This is the most simple version of the recipe. You follow the key steps to make your jello. Pour it into a small baking dish lined with wax paper.

Once firm from refrigeration, cut jello into squares and place on a serving dish. Add sprinkles for a little shimmer.

This is for those who like to make things from mixes. Seriously, it cannot get any easier than this.

“The Negotiator”

I refer to this as The Negotiator because this is what I envisioned would be the outcome if The Original and The Couch Potato got into a heated debate. It has a little bit of the convenience of the Couch Potato, but oozes more cool just like The Original.

You will create the numbers just as in the recipe for the original, but then place them along the bottom of a wax paper-lined dish. Freeze until numbers are stuck to paper.

Pour a little of the champagne jello over the numbers and place back in freezer until it has begun to solidify. The pour the rest of the jello over.

Once firm from refrigeration, cut jello into squares and place on a serving dish. Add sprinkles for a little shimmer.

See? It reads, �.” Â What other blog has jello shots with numbers in them? This one does.

“The Sparkling Acid Trip”

I have never taken acid, mind you. For some reason I look at these and think this is what Lady Gaga sees after a drug bender. She wakes up on the floor and peers at the ceiling though her glittery eyelashes. “Is this Elton John’s washroom?”

No, Lady Gaga. You just OD’d  on champagne and glitter.

This is created almost the same at the original. You simply pour into a baking dish. Then pour in some luster dust, disco dust, and dab in a toothpick-sized point of blue food coloring paste. Mix.

Once firm from refrigeration, cut jello into squares and place on a serving dish. Add sprinkles for a little shimmer.

Did I tell you my resolution for 2013?

1. Go to rehab for an edible glitter addiction.

2. Find out what Lady Gaga is on. Avoid at all costs.

Happy New Year’s Resolution Creation Day. While I’m ahead of the game, Happy Imminent Resolution Failure Day (also known as January 2).

Now go finish your champagne jello.

Some tools used in this post:

– After trial and error, I find that using half champagne and half or a carbonated sweet drink work best. It tastes delicious and the soda holds bubbles longer than champagne in the jello.

When using the numbers, whether in the champagne glass or on a baking dish, make sure they are frozen to the point where they stuck to the surface well.

If using only champagne, use a straw to blow bubbles into the jello when it is halfway to becoming solidified.

– Sanding sugar will dissolve in contact with jello, so if you want to use that sprinkle on and serve immediately. Dabbing the jello with a paper towel ahead of time helps slow the dissolve.

If you have trouble for any reason with plating cubes of jello, cut into tiny cubes/pieces and fill champagne flutes with the cube. Top with whipped cream and sprinkles before serving. Easy and pretty.

Don’t you think it would be better to put that extra $200 ($2,400 per year) in your bank account, just in case you may have to pay your $2,500 deductible or buy a $12 Amoxicillin prescription? How to Make White Pina Colada Jello Shots

1. Pour 1 cup coconut milk in a bowl and sprinkle 2 envelopes of plain gelatin over the top of it. Set aside.

I use a bowl with a handle and spout*…it makes pouring the jello into the cups much easier when we get to that stage.

2. Heat 1 cup pineapple juice until it is just boiling. It needs to be hot but you don’t want too much of it to evaporate.

3. Combine the hot pineapple juice with the coconut milk and stir until all of the gelatin has dissolved. This could take a minute or two.

I like to use a whisk rather than a spoon for this step. It seems to do a better job of combining all of the ingredients.

4. Stir in the alcohol: 3/4 cup Malibu coconut rum.

You can also use regular rum if you prefer, but I like the extra coconut flavor.

Or if you want a version that the kids can eat, use extra coconut milk and/or pineapple juice instead of the rum.

5. Pour the jello mixture into the jello shot cups and they are ready to chill!

You may want to wait until the jello is cool before putting the lids on. That will prevent condensation from building up on them. It isn’t really a big deal if it does, since it doesn’t hurt the jello. They just look a little nicer without it.

5. Refrigerate the jello shots for 2 to 4 hours until they are set.
